Paediatric Immediate Life Support (recertification)

pILS Course Logo

The Resuscitation Council (UK) Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS) course was launched in 2007. It was developed in response to a demand from healthcare professionals who may have to act as first responders and treat seriously ill children or children in cardiac arrest until the arrival of a cardiac arrest team.

Who is this course suitable for?
Only candidates who have previously successfully completed the PILS course, and are within one year of the expiry date on their PILS certificate, can attend a PILS Recertification course. Candidates for whom more than one year has elapsed since their initial PILS course are not eligible to attend the Recertification course.

In addition, EPLS Providers who hold a current EPLS certificate may obtain PILS certification by attending a PILS Recertification course.

Learning outcomes
The PILS Recertification course is designed to refresh the theory and practical skills of ABCDE clinical assessment required by healthcare professionals to recognise seriously ill children and initiate appropriate interventions to prevent cardiorespiratory arrest. The immediate management of the child in cardiorespiratory arrest is also revised.

PILS Recertification courses are held at centres throughout the UK and are approved and certified by the Resuscitation Council (UK). This ensures uniformity of content and standard regardless of the centre.

The PILS Recertification course is run over half a day and the course programme consists of one lecture, demonstration and practice, skill stations and simulation practice.

Assessment and Certification
Continuous assessment is undertaken throughout the course, utilising the ABCDE, BLS and Airway assessment forms.

The standard course last 3 hours and comprises:

  • Interactive lecture; ABCDE assessment and the paediatric ALS algorithm
  • Practice of ABCDE clinical assessment
  • Practice of in-hospital BLS with bag mask ventilation
  • Simulation practices with continuous assessment

Successful candidates receive a Resuscitation Council (UK) PILS provider certificate, which is valid for one year. The PILS course is recognised for up to 5 continuing professional development (CPD) points.

Pre-course preparation
Candidates must have a current PILS manual. Assessment forms and course details (including manual if required) must be sent to the candidates at least two weeks before the re-certification course date.
